Sports and physical education play an important part in the Wilderness curriculum. As well as health and fitness benefits, physical activity helps to develop self-esteem, teamwork and concentration. In a time when childhood obesity is increasing and the overall participation rates for girls in sports are decreasing, we believe it is important to encourage a love of physical activity from an early age.
From Reception to Year 11, all students study Physical Education. In the Junior School this includes game skills, gymnastics, dance, swimming, fitness, personal health, nutrition and recreation. From Year 7 to Year 10, in addition to Physical Education, all students also participate in the Outdoor Education program. Students develop an understanding and an appreciation of the natural environment and learn valuable survival skills while participating in outdoor leisure activities that have minimal environmental impact. These activities may include bushwalking and orienteering, rock climbing. The format of the program varies from day trips to 5-day camps.
All girls from Year 5 onwards are encouraged to play a team sport, either intra-school or inter-school. The sports offered at each year level are as follows:
Minkey, modified netball, t-ball, sofcrosse, tennis, softball, hockey, netball, soccer, cross country, swimming, athletics.
Tennis, volleyball, rowing, soccer, hockey, netball, basketball, lacrosse, athletics, swimming, gymnastics, cross country running, water polo.
