Sport at Seymour College

Seymour’s philosophy is to promote physical activity to all students and provide opportunities for participation and performance at all levels of skill. Sport is not compulsory at Seymour, however, being involved in sport promotes both physical and mental wellbeing, builds confidence, encourages teamwork and helps facilitate friendships outside of the classroom. Sport should be fun, as well as competitive and teach students how to enjoy success and accept disappointment.

Values such as sportsmanship, humility in victory and graciousness in defeat, participation, improvement and effort directed towards excellence are embedded in the culture of sport at Seymour. Winning should be viewed as a result of process rather than as an end in itself. Success as achievement is certainly not measured solely by winning.

At Seymour we aim to

  • To inspire a love for participation in physical activity and competitive sport
  • To play a number of sports in a high achieving program
  • To foster values of sportsmanship and respect
  • To develop teamwork and leadership opportunities at all levels
  • To provide an environment to build relationships outside the classroom
  • To develop tolerance, compassion and kindness
  • To develop strong levels of commitment to the sports of choice
  • To show resilience and humility when winning and loosing
  • To develop high level of tactical and technical understanding of the specific sports

In addition to PE lessons, Seymour also offers a High Performance Sport subject at Year 8-11 where students can learn the skills necessary to perform at high levels. Taught by AFLW player Ange Foley, this subject is very popular among our high achieving sportswomen as a means to learn and train with likeminded student and coaches.
